TIF reform

Under Valerie’s leadership, the Lawndale Alliance worked with Terrance Harrington, CEO of HOPE (Helping Others Provide Excellence, NFP) and Jimmy Lee Lard to host a town hall meeting and training in preparation for Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s TIF Reform Task Force’s public meeting. The agenda for the workshop was determined by the results of a survey of likely participants conducted prior to event. The presenters included local residents who provided an overview of what TIFs are and how they work, as well as a facilitated discussion to get a sense for how the City’s TIF program could be improved. The brainstorming session results were used to develop a set of recommendations that were presented to the Mayor’s TIF Reform Task Force in the summer of 2011. A number of the community’s recommendations were adopted by the Mayor’s task force, including the need to measure the impact of each TIF within the context of its programmatic and financial goals and objectives.
