The Alliance for Community Media (ACM)

 

The Alliance works with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Congress, state legislatures, state regulatory agencies, and coalition partners to ensure that all people regardless of race, age, gender, disability, religion or economic status have access to technology.

The Blowitz-Ridgeway Foundation

 

The Blowitz-Ridgeway Foundation was founded in 1984 with the proceeds of the sale of Chicago’s Ridgeway Hospital, a nonprofit psychiatric facility focusing on low-income adolescents. One of its primary funding areas is the support of nonprofit agencies which provide medical and psychological services to economically disadvantaged children and adolescents, thereby continuing the original mission of the hospital. As of September 30, 2004, it has provided $18,837,179 in grants and program-related investments to a variety of health care and social service agencies, as well as scholarship funds and medical research awards.

Chicago Department of Housing

The Chicago Department of Housing was established in 1980 to provide financial assistance to homeowners and developers to preserve and create affordable housing options. Working with other City agencies, non-profit and for-profit community development corporations and other community organizations, the Department employs innovative ways to finance affordable housing projects.

Since 1993, the City has invested more than $1 billion dollars to create and preserve over 45,000 units of affordable housing and 30,000 units of rental housing for working families, senior citizens and individuals living in single-room-occupancy buildings.  

 

Chicago Rehab Network

 

For 25 years, the Chicago Rehab Network (CRN) has worked to further the development and preservation of safe affordable housing in Chicago, and throughout the state of Illinois. CRN builds capacity of community developers through training and technical assistance, conducts research to measure needs and clarify challenges to affordable housing development, and advocates for sound housing policy on the city, state and federal level.

 

 

Community Media Workshop

 

The Community Media Workshop, founded by a journalist, Hank De Zutter, and a community activist, Thom Clark, is a small institution trying to link the two Chicagos by encouraging the media to tell the stories of the other Chicago, the oft-neglected neighborhoods and back streets of Chicago, where the problems are felt most deeply and where solutions are most likely to be born.

The Enterprise Foundation

The Foundation Center

Housing Action Illinois

 

OUR VISION: To create an environment where all Illinois residents, including people with the lowest incomes, have a voice in housing policy and community development. We seek to bring together community stakeholders such as residents, businesses, and government to work together to increase the supply and availability of affordable housing across the state.


 

Housing Assistance Council (HAC)

 

A nonprofit corporation headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Housing Assistance Council (HAC) has been helping local organizations build affordable homes in rural America since 1971. HAC emphasizes local solutions, empowerment of the poor, reduced dependence, and self-help strategies. HAC assists in the development of both single- and multi-family homes and promotes homeownership for working low-income rural families through a self-help, "sweat equity" construction method. The Housing Assistance Council offers services to public, nonprofit, and private organizations throughout the rural United States. HAC also maintains a special focus on high-need groups and regions: Indian country, the Mississippi Delta, farm workers, the Southwest border colonias, and Appalachia.

 

 

Illinois Historic Preservation Agency

 

Welcome to the web site of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The Agency operates over 60 historic sites and memorials. The Agency also administers the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, the state’s chief historical and genealogical research facility that is home to the state’s world-renowned Abraham Lincoln collection. The library will house the Agency's collection of more than 12 million items of Illinois history and the museum will feature many of our Lincoln artifacts as well as two main theaters. We administer all state and federal historic preservation and incentive programs in Illinois, including the National Register of Historic Places. Thank you for visiting.

 

 

Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA)

 

Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) finances the creation and preservation of affordable housing throughout the state and increases the supply of decent and safe places for people of low or moderate means to live.

IHDA has helped finance more than 150,000 units of affordable housing, with more than $6.4 billion. While we have helped bring affordable housing to every county in the state, IHDA does not own property, rent apartments or manage buildings. We are strictly a financing entity, and help to finance affordable housing through homeownership programs targeted at low- or moderate-income households, or with multifamily development financing to help developers build rental properties for at-need populations.

 

 

Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

 

The IRS is a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and one of the world's most efficient tax administrators. In 2004, the IRS collected more than $2 trillion in revenue and processed more than 224 million tax returns.

Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois (LPCI)

 

The Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois is the state’s leading voice for historic preservation.  From the rubble of the 1971 demolition of Adler and Sullivan's masterpiece old Chicago Stock Exchange Building, LPCI rose to become a 2000 member statewide organization.

 

 

Lawndale Christian Development Corporation (LCDC)

 

Lawndale Christian Development Corporation was established by the Lawndale Community Church in 1987 to bring holistic revitalization to the lives and the environments of North Lawndale residents through economic empowerment, educational enrichment, and the provision of decent housing that is affordable to low and moderate income people.

 

 

Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)

 

Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) helps resident-led, community-based development organizations transform distressed communities and neighborhoods into healthy ones-- good places to live, do business, work and raise families. By providing capital, technical expertise, training and information, LISC supports the development of local leadership and the creation of affordable housing, commercial, industrial and community facilities, businesses and jobs. We help neighbors build communities.

 

 

LISC/Chicago

 

LISC/Chicago organizes capital and other resources to support initiatives that will stimulate the comprehensive development of healthy, stable neighborhoods and foster their connection to the socioeconomic mainstream of the metropolitan region.

Since 1980, LISC/Chicago has infused more than $100 million into housing and economic development, which has leveraged an additional $2 billion in community investment. The results are quantifiable: more than 16,000 units of affordable housing and nearly 3 million square feet of commercial space have been developed.


 

The Monroe Foundation

 

The Monroe Foundation is a publicly-supported not-for-profit agency-community and enterprise development agency that seeks to educate, link and fund community development projects in the City of Chicago. The Monroe Foundation was formed in 1991 to provide technical assistance in starting community and economic development projects within low-income communities, and provide emerging groups with seed grants through the PACT Project (Partnership For Assisting  Community Transformation)


 

National Trust for Historic Preservation

 

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to saving historic places and revitalizing America's communities. Recipient of the National Humanities Medal, the Trust was founded in 1949 and provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources to protect the irreplaceable places that tell America’s story. Staff at the Washington, D.C., headquarters, six regional offices and 26 historic sites work with the Trust’s 270,000 members and thousands of preservation groups in all 50 states.

 

 

Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission (NIPC)

 

The Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission is the official comprehensive planning agency for six counties -- Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will -- that form the greater Chicago metropolitan area. NIPC works with local governments and others to promote sensible growth.  The Commission was formed by act of the Illinois General Assembly in 1957, with a mandate to provide the region with comprehensive planning and forecasts of population, employment, and other socio-economic indicators.  Read more in "about NIPC."

 

 

NPO Assist

 

Nonprofits need to be well managed, well governed and efficient to fulfill their missions. A group of organizations in Chicago--nonprofits themselves--offer training, consulting and other forms of technical assistance in essential skills including financial management, fundraising, media relations, legal services, technology and more. These organizations, which have come together as NPO Assist, can fill in the gaps in your own expertise. They know nonprofits. And, most important, they are as passionate as you are about helping your group fulfill its mission.


 

PolicyLink

 

PolicyLink is a national nonprofit research, communications, capacity building, and advocacy organization working to advance policies to achieve economic and social equity. PolicyLink collaborates with a broad range of partners to implement strategies to ensure that everyone—including those from low-income communities of color—can contribute to and benefit from economic growth and prosperity. Among our regional equity approaches is equitable development, a comprehensive local, regional, and state framework emphasizing equitable public investment, the fair distribution of affordable housing, and community strategies to improve health.

Prevention Force Family Center

 

Prevention Force Family Center (PFFC) is a 501-(c) 3 nonprofit community based organization that is located in the North Lawndale community.  PFFC was established in 1996 by a community resident who believes that struggling youth and families need and deserve an opportunity to "get back on track," with qualified prevention, youth, education and entrepreneurial programs and services.
