The Greater Chicago Housing and Community Development Website
The Greater Chicago Housing and Community Development Website is designed to guide and assist policy makers, housing/community development professionals, planners, researchers, developers and people seeking to buy or rent a home. The website will make available a wealth of data and information about the housing environment in Chicago and other communities throughout the region.
OUR VISION: To create an environment where all Illinois residents, including people with the lowest incomes, have a voice in housing policy and community development. We seek to bring together community stakeholders such as residents, businesses, and government to work together to increase the supply and availability of affordable housing across the state.
Housing Assistance Council (HAC)
A nonprofit corporation headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Housing Assistance Council (HAC) has been helping local organizations build affordable homes in rural America since 1971. HAC emphasizes local solutions, empowerment of the poor, reduced dependence, and self-help strategies. HAC assists in the development of both single- and multi-family homes and promotes homeownership for working low-income rural families through a self-help, "sweat equity" construction method. The Housing Assistance Council offers services to public, nonprofit, and private organizations throughout the rural United States. HAC also maintains a special focus on high-need groups and regions: Indian country, the Mississippi Delta, farm workers, the Southwest border colonias, and Appalachia.

Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA)
Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA)
finances the creation and preservation of affordable
housing throughout the state and
increases the supply of decent and safe places for people of low
or moderate means to live.
IHDA has helped finance more than 150,000 units of affordable
housing, with more than $6.4
billion. While we have helped bring affordable
housing to every county in the
state, IHDA does not own property, rent apartments or manage
buildings. We are strictly a financing entity, and help to
finance affordable housing through
homeownership programs targeted at low- or moderate-income
households, or with multifamily development financing to help
developers build rental properties for at-need populations.

Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)
Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) helps resident-led, community-based development organizations transform distressed communities and neighborhoods into healthy ones-- good places to live, do business, work and raise families. By providing capital, technical expertise, training and information, LISC supports the development of local leadership and the creation of affordable housing, commercial, industrial and community facilities, businesses and jobs. We help neighbors build communities.
LISC/Chicago organizes capital and other resources to support
initiatives that will stimulate the comprehensive development of
healthy, stable neighborhoods and foster their connection to the
socioeconomic mainstream of the metropolitan region.
Since 1980, LISC/Chicago has infused more than $100 million into
housing and economic development, which has leveraged an
additional $2 billion in community investment. The results are
quantifiable: more than 16,000 units of affordable housing and
nearly 3 million square feet of commercial space have been
developed.

Nonprofits need to be well managed, well governed and efficient to fulfill their missions. A group of organizations in Chicago--nonprofits themselves--offer training, consulting and other forms of technical assistance in essential skills including financial management, fundraising, media relations, legal services, technology and more. These organizations, which have come together as NPO Assist, can fill in the gaps in your own expertise. They know nonprofits. And, most important, they are as passionate as you are about helping your group fulfill its mission.
